What should be considered when buying and using tarpaulins?

Tarpaulins and guyed covers are primarily used to protect materials from moisture, wind, and damage. They are used both indoors and outdoors. When purchasing a tarpaulin, it's important to ensure it's made of robust, water-repellent material. Reinforced corners are also recommended, and sealed seams are advantageous for weather protection. The eyelets should be carefully crafted to prevent tearing. A greater number of guy points helps distribute the tension evenly when securing the tarpaulin and prevents it from tearing, even in strong winds.

The material's thickness should match its intended use. A thicker tarp is more robust and tear-resistant, which translates to a higher weight and larger dimensions when folded. Especially for outdoor applications—such as hiking camping trips—a thinner tarp is well-suited due to its light weight and backpack-friendly dimensions; its insulating properties also allow it to be used as a sleeping bag liner. What types of tarpaulins are there?

Different types of tarpaulins are available on the market, depending on their intended use. For vehicles, a distinction is made between tarpaulin curtains, trailer tarpaulins, and standard tarpaulins, whereas in the construction industry, as well as for painting and wallpapering, universal, high-strength tarpaulins are used. Special covers exist for swimming pools. Tarpaulins for military use and survival situations generally have to meet specific requirements regarding weather resistance and color (camouflage).

What are the differences between the individual tarpaulins?

Tarpaulins can generally be distinguished by their reusability, weight, light transmission, UV resistance, tear resistance, heat resistance, and general weather resistance. Which properties are most important naturally depends on the intended use.

What does the term "water column" mean?

The water column is a unit of measurement that indicates the water resistance of technical fabrics. It measures the fill level at which, after 24 hours, the first water drops seep through a 10 cm diameter cylinder filled with water and placed on the fabric being tested. The value is given in mmWS (millimeters of water column) and is particularly important when high pressure is to be applied to the material.
