First aid for all outdoor activities

Anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors knows that a doctor is not always nearby. For this reason, it is important to be prepared with the appropriate equipment.

Using a kit should be practiced

Before you set off on an outdoor activity with such a complete kit, you should practice using it. This provides confidence in handling the contents. If the kit really does have to be used, the helper doesn’t have to think for long, and every move is spot on. In addition, this makes it easy to become familiar with the contents so that you know what all the items and little helpers are actually for.
Our kits are designed so that they are easy to use and do not require lengthy instruction. Nevertheless, you should take a close look at the contents, because only then will the helper know what is in the kit, where it is stored and how they can provide assistance.
There are different first-aid kits for different applications. Before setting off on an outdoor activity, you should consider which type of configuration you need in order to be prepared for many eventualities. The light and compact packaging makes them easy to take along, so the kits do not add much weight and can be carried in a backpack or bag.

Choosing the right first aid kit

For first aid in an emergency, various kits are available that can be selected depending on your needs and activity. When camping, it is usually sufficient if, for example, a first aid box contains plasters and bandages for various minor wounds, as campsites are generally relatively central, meaning that a doctor or hospital can be reached fairly quickly. You are also mobile when camping.
For demanding outdoor activities, a surgeon’s kit, rescue blankets and sterile cloths should definitely be carried to compensate for this lack of mobility.
On hikes far from civilization and during military exercises, survival kits are indispensable. These contain everything needed for the initial treatment of wounds. A longer expedition or march should not be undertaken without such a survival kit. If an accident really does occur, a person’s life may depend on the group carrying the right equipment for first aid. ASMC offers various first aid kits and survival kits to meet different needs. It is important that the kit is adapted to the type and duration of the expedition and that sufficient supplies are carried for treatment.

There are various DIN standards that regulate the contents of a kit or first aid bag. The most important are DIN 13157, 13164 and 13169.

Expert tip: How do you treat wounds without industrial aids?

Disinfecting wounds is also possible, for example, with methylated spirits or tea tree oil. In an absolutely extreme emergency, it is supposedly also possible to use ash – of course no longer hot. However, we cannot accept any liability for this tip. It is best to visit your family doctor before embarking on a major trip and clarify a few open questions like these.

In any case, you should take compresses and sterile dressings with you; there is really no way around them and they are indispensable if you are spending longer periods of time in the wild.

Questions: First aid

Was gibt es bei der Wund-Desinfektion zu beachten?

The first and most important point is that you should always rinse wounds thoroughly, of course only with clean water, ideally drinking water you have brought with you. In an emergency, water from a stream can also be used. After that, you can use alcohol—ideally with an alcohol content of over 70%—to properly disinfect the wound if you have nothing else at hand (wound-disinfection spray, etc.). You should, however, be prepared for a strong burning sensation.
There are also practical, individually packaged "alcohol swabs" that are designed precisely for such cases and are ready to use immediately. As an alternative, urine can also be used, as it can likewise be considered sterile. Water is still regarded as the better option because it contains fewer additional substances than urine.
Also important:
You should not use disinfectant on large wounds or open fractures!
What you should absolutely avoid:
Aftershave is usually perfumed and, due to the risk of blood poisoning, must never be used for disinfection.

How do you suture wounds correctly?

According to common opinion, this should not be done by laypersons, as the risk of further injuries and/or blood poisoning/infections is far too high. Another difficulty is, of course, that you usually have a poor or no view of your own wound.
Side note:
Histoacryl, a medical tissue adhesive, is unfortunately not very suitable for outdoor activities if you want to avoid stitching a larger wound. This is because the product requires refrigerated storage.

How often should you change wound dressings/bandages?

It is recommended to change them daily if possible.

What should you do if you feel unsure about providing care?

Of course, refreshing the first aid course you were required to take for your driver’s license is not a bad idea. However, there are also special outdoor first aid courses that realistically simulate and practice the situations that may actually occur.
