Tarp tents offer numerous advantages for your outdoor adventures! From versatility and lightness to ease of use – tarps are the ideal companion for any outdoor adventure.
Tarp tents have a wealth of advantages that make them an unbeatable choice for your outdoor adventures. First and foremost, they are incredibly versatile. Whether you need a robust cover to protect yourself from the elements, a shady retreat for a leisurely al fresco lunch, or an improvised emergency shelter in the wilderness, a tarp can effortlessly meet all these needs.
Another major advantage of tarps is their lightness and compactness. Compared to traditional tents, they are often significantly lighter and can be packed away in a space-saving manner. This makes them ideal for hikes, backpacking trips, or camping excursions where every gram counts. So, if you're going on multi-day treks or planning a camping trip by bike, you'll appreciate the ease of use and minimal weight of a tarp.
Another advantage is its ease of use and quick setup time. With a little practice, you can pitch your tarp in no time, whether alone or with the help of friends. There are numerous attachment options and configurations, so you can always find a suitable solution for your needs. This not only saves time but also allows you to react flexibly to changing weather conditions or terrain.
When buying a tarp, several factors should be considered to ensure it meets your needs and requirements. A key difference lies in the number of grommets and guy points. The more grommets and guy points a tarp has, the more flexible it is in terms of shape and the more options it offers for different setup configurations. This versatility is particularly useful if you plan to use the tarp in varying environments and weather conditions. It allows you to optimally adapt the tarp to your specific needs.
Another important criterion is the tarp's waterproof rating, usually measured in millimeters of water column. This rating indicates how waterproof the tarp is and how well it protects you from rain. A higher rating is particularly relevant if you intend to use the tarp as a stable tent or emergency shelter in heavy rain and wind. However, a lower rating is sufficient for use as a standard camping tent or sunshade.
The material of the tarp is also crucial. Polyester is widely used as the base material , but different manufacturers offer varying thicknesses and strengths. Some tarps also use blended fabrics that incorporate cotton . These offer greater stability and a more pleasant feel, but tend to be more expensive and have a lower hydrostatic head rating.
Before you set off, you should check that you have enough guy lines to pitch your tarp. It's advisable to plan for one or two extra guy lines in case one gets lost or damaged.
If you've already used the tarp on a trip, you should check that all seams are intact before the next use. Especially if the tarp is intended to protect against rain and wind, the seams must be closed and undamaged. The accompanying stuff sacks for ropes and other equipment should also be intact to prevent any accessories from getting lost along the way.
When securing your tarp, always use sturdy supports that provide optimal stability even in bad weather. If you don't expect to encounter large trees or other anchor points on your trip, poles can be a useful alternative.
Aside from whether a tarp is used for camping or as a sunshade, there are many different ways to set it up. Everyone can decide for themselves which method is best suited to their needs . This guide presents four common tarp setup methods.
All tarps made of polyethylene and PVC vinyl are water-resistant as long as the waterproofing is effective. If the waterproofing diminishes, you can refresh it with a waterproofing spray. But be aware: tarps are water-resistant, not waterproof.
A 6 mm thick strand of nylon or polyester embroidery thread is a good size; even better, to be on the safe side, is a 10 mm diameter. If the diameter is less than 6 mm, it is recommended to double the strand.
Cooking under tarps is possible, but not recommended. Tarps are primarily made of synthetic fibers and are therefore highly flammable (some manufacturers advertise their tarps as being made of fire-resistant materials, but this is not guaranteed). Not only cooking, but also smoking and any kind of fire (e.g., candles) are prohibited under or inside tarps.
Per mille is the unit of length used to define the thickness of the tarp material. One per mille is equal to 0.0254 mm. Generally, the thicker the material, the better the quality.
