When purifying water, it is important to follow the correct procedure. Incorrect use can, in the worst case, result in water contaminated with germs, which in turn may cause illness.
Before using water filters for the first time, the instructions for use should be read carefully. These provide information on how the model or variant is to be operated/used in each individual case. In general, there is not much that can be done wrong when using water filters. The devices are easy to use and robustly built.
Before choosing a device for water purification or a chemical method in powder or liquid form, you should keep the intended area of use in mind. Our range includes many different products. Water filters differ in particular in terms of their performance. While some water filters primarily remove pathogens, coliform bacteria and parasites, others also eliminate chlorine, heavy metals and impurities. Some water filters even improve the taste of the water.
Camouflage clothing has its origins in the military world. Originally, soldiers fought only in forests or jungle and were meant to be harder for the enemy to spot thanks to camouflage suits. Camouflage suits were designed for changing environments as well as different temperatures. In a densely wooded forest, for example, a T-shirt and matching trousers are sufficient. In open terrain, you should opt for a parka or a camouflage poncho to cover the remaining exposed areas of skin. Camouflage clothing is also differentiated by color (beige, olive, brown, camouflage patterns), material, different carrying systems (e.g. body armor, vests) and useful accessories (e.g. camouflage cream, camouflage paint, camouflage tape). Camouflage nets also originate from the world of snipers. These are draped completely over the body and have the effect that the soldier or role-player is virtually invisible from a distance and appears to blend completely into the surroundings.
Which product is used for water purification depends primarily on the intended area of application and individual needs. However, you generally can’t go wrong with the products from our range, as they come from renowned brand manufacturers and have proven themselves in practice.
When you’re on the move, it can easily happen that you run out of clean water. If you don’t have a professional water filtration system and are also not carrying chemical tablets, powders or water-purifying liquids, you can use an alternative method with just a few resources:
The best option is to use a homemade water filter consisting of several layers. For this you primarily need grasses, sand (clean everything as thoroughly as possible beforehand), and charcoal. Ideally, you also have a coffee filter with you, which you should always carry if possible due to its light weight, as it is very versatile. Otherwise, you can cut a plastic bottle to size; holes must be made in the bottom so that the filtered water can run through.
At the very bottom layer of the filter you should place the coffee filter or, alternatively, grass and leaves, or ideally straw. Then comes a layer of sand or, if necessary, soil. Next comes a layer of crushed charcoal (the charcoal should be broken down into a powder as much as possible). This should be followed by another layer of sand or soil, and finally closed off again with a coffee filter or grasses.
To be on the safe side, the water should be boiled after filtering. Filtering only removes the coarsest impurities; it does not disinfect the water. One final recommendation: running water is always preferable to standing water.
There are three groups of contaminants: organisms, chemicals, and suspended solids. In the worst case, four groups of organisms can be present in water: multicellular organisms, protozoa, bacteria, and viruses.
does not remove suspended solids or chemicals. However, single-celled and multicellular organisms, bacteria and viruses are reliably killed by boiling. The water should be brought to a rolling boil for at least 10 minutes. You can read about the remaining steps for water purification/filtration in our expert tip above.
Water purification by boiling: let the water boil for at least 10 minutes and (in principle) you have drinking water. Advantages: no chemicals needed, no additional equipment, inexpensive and very reliable with an appropriate boiling time. Disadvantages: you need fuel, the boiling point of water decreases with increasing altitude – while the required boiling time increases, taste and smell of the water are not improved, and chemical substances may remain in the water.
In this process, pathogens in the water are killed chemically by adding drops, powder or tablets. Advantages: extremely light and quick to carry out with little effort, low pack volume, long-term preservation, disinfection of large quantities of water at once possible. Disadvantages: taste and smell of the water may be impaired, high cost per liter of disinfected drinking water, long reaction times of over 30 minutes, chemical substances may remain in the water.
Depending on the filter used, bacteria, viruses and protozoa are removed from the water. Some water filters also have activated carbon elements to neutralize taste. Advantages: reliable disinfection, no fuel required, long service life, with activated carbon filter improved taste and odor, in some cases even filters chemicals, water can be drunk immediately. Disadvantages: additional weight and pack size, high purchase price, filter elements can clog and require frequent cleaning, pumping can become tiring.
