More and more law enforcement officers are injured in the line of duty, and unfortunately, the trend is rising. Police officers are attacked, seriously injured, and killed in the pursuit of criminal interests. However, the chances of survival are considerably higher than one might think, especially with good physical fitness. Studies indicate that strong self-confidence can significantly improve the ability to cope with negative stress situations. This book is intentionally not a scientific treatise, but rather practical advice from the field. Physical training is relevant to every police officer and soldier. Every officer can find themselves in such life-threatening situations at any time, whether they want to or not. A determined attacker won't ask for clarification. Mental and, above all, physical fitness are indispensable for police and military careers, from the first day of service to the last. Fitness is a lifeline for officers in high-risk situations. Those who don't train regularly endanger themselves and others. Citizens seeking help and fellow officers expect physically and mentally capable officers. Therefore, staying fit is not an option, but an obligation. This book addresses the specific mental and physical challenges of police work. The numerous details regarding the connection between regular exercise, mental health, and vitality also apply to all professions that require a high level of physical fitness (e.g., riot police, soldiers on deployment, and special forces of all kinds). The readiness, assertiveness, and courage to confront current terrorist threats from militarily organized small groups and brutal lone actors require training. Handling the additional equipment—ballistic helmet, plate carrier, shield, and assault rifle—demands a solid physical foundation. However, the greatest challenge in a prolonged firefight is mental strain. Emergency personnel must be prepared for this. Only with the right training can they manage mental tension and physical exhaustion. Aggression, a propensity for violence, and recklessness are rightly viewed negatively in everyday modern civil society. However, in an attack or defense situation in life-threatening operational scenarios, they are indispensable when controlled within the bounds of proportionality. This book shares important insights and training procedures from an experienced police officer, athlete, and instructor. Also particularly noteworthy are the chapters on the topics of over-40s service sports, sports after (operational) injuries, sports during operations under difficult conditions and preparation for the selection procedures of various special forces.
