Protective glasses serve to ensure safety

Human eyesight is irreplaceable and therefore, for activities that take place outdoors or in DIY settings and could be dangerous, safety glasses should never be dispensed with.

Easy use is guaranteed for eye protection

There are different types of safety glasses for different applications. The aim of these glasses is to protect the eyes effectively. They are worn like normal glasses, but there are different fastening options that have proven particularly effective in outdoor use. For example, there are safety glasses that are secured with a strap at the back of the head. This is designed to ensure a secure fit. Other safety glasses have so-called sports temples that curve a little more around the ear than normal glasses so that they don’t fall off even during more vigorous activities. The safety glasses come with a case in which they can be stored safely when not in use. The case is compact and easy to handle. It can always be carried along and stowed away easily, so the glasses are ready to hand at any time.

Safety glasses are available in different versions

At ASMC you’ll find safety glasses in various designs and from different manufacturers, such as Uvex, Bollé or 3M. They often have tinted lenses for protection against sun and UV light, some even certified according to DIN EN 166, providing up to 100% UV protection. Classic temple‑arm models are available as well as versions that are secured with a wide strap at the back of the head and cannot slip. The lenses are made from special plastics that are particularly hard and durable. They are far less prone to scratching, breaking or shattering than normal glasses. The lenses of safety glasses come in various tints and are thus suitable for different applications. They provide special protection for the eyes, not only from strong sunlight but also from dust or small flying particles such as shavings or splinters.

Experten-Tipp:

Using glasses as a magnifying glass substitute

To use glasses, whether safety glasses or any other type, as a magnifying glass, it is enough to fill the lens area with water (or a similar liquid). This changes the way the light rays are refracted and the glasses then serve as a magnifying glass.

Questions: Safety glasses

For which tasks is it advisable to wear protective or safety glasses?

In principle, you should wear such glasses for any work that could pose any kind of risk to your eyes. When handling lye, corrosive liquids or applying wood preservative stain, a splash can get into your eye just as easily as a chip can fly off when you’re shredding wood with a chipper or whittling. That’s why eye protection is recommended. But even for sporting activities such as airsoft, protective glasses can be more than advisable. For regular operations with firearms, there are also so‑called ballistic models that are even more shatter‑resistant.

Is special protective eyewear required to view a solar eclipse?

Yes, absolutely. In the case of a partial or total eclipse of the sun, the remaining brightness at the edge is an extremely glaring light that, so to speak, outshines the darkness and makes it much worse. Alternatively, there are special filter foils that can be attached, for example, to your own glasses or a camera. You can usually recognize such glasses quite easily, as they look as if they are covered with aluminum foil. Under no circumstances may you look at a solar eclipse without such glasses, as this can cause permanent damage to your eyes. Warning 1: Sunglasses do not meet the requirements under any circumstances, no matter how dark they are. Warning 2: Driving a car while wearing these protective glasses is not permitted.

What materials are safety glasses made from?

Most models are made of plastic that has been specially treated or manufactured to prevent breaking or shattering as is common with normal glasses.

What is the best way to clean glasses?

You should always use special glasses cleaning cloths, as all other cloths such as tissues or napkins can firstly leave lint and secondly are usually far too rough. This can result in permanent scuff marks or even deeper scratches.

What are so‑called full‑vision goggles?

These are safety goggles that completely seal off the eye area all around. This is achieved by a gasket that runs around the entire inner edge of the goggles. For a secure fit, the goggles are also equipped with a headband so that the seal can be ensured by slight pressure.
