More and more law enforcement officers are being injured on duty, and unfortunately the trend is rising. To enforce criminal interests, police officers are attacked, seriously injured and killed. However, the chances of survival are considerably higher than one might think if you are in good physical condition. Studies suggest that with strong self-confidence, you can cope very well with negative stress situations. This specialist book is deliberately not designed as an academic paper, but rather from practice for practice. Physical training is relevant to every police officer and soldier. Any operational officer can find themselves in such life-threatening situations at any time, whether they want to or not. A determined attacker will not ask about that. Mental and, above all, physical fitness are indispensable for the police and soldier professions, from the first to the last working day. For exposed operational forces, fitness is a life insurance policy. Those who do not train regularly put themselves and others at risk. Citizens and comrades seeking help expect operational forces who are physically and mentally capable. Therefore, staying fit is not an option, but an obligation. The book addresses the specific mental and physical challenges of the police profession. The numerous details about the connection between regular exercise, mental health and vitality also apply to all professions in which special physical fitness is required (e.g. intervention units, soldiers on deployment and all kinds of special forces). Readiness for action, assertiveness and the courage to confront current terrorist threats from militarily organized small groups and brutal lone offenders also require training. Handling the additional equipment – ballistic helmet, plate carrier, shield and assault rifle – requires solid physical foundations. The greatest challenge in a prolonged firefight, however, is the mental strain. Operational forces must be able to prepare for this. Only with the right training can you get a grip on mental tension and physical exhaustion. Aggressiveness, willingness to use violence and ruthlessness are rightly viewed negatively in everyday modern civil society. In an attack or defense situation in life-threatening operational scenarios, however, they are indispensable, in a controlled way and within the bounds of proportionality. The book passes on important insights and training routines from an experienced police officer and athlete as well as instructor to the reader. Particularly noteworthy are the chapters on over-40 duty sports, sports after (operational) injuries, sports during deployment under difficult conditions and preparation for the selection processes of various special forces.
