To ensure that lighting your field stove or campfire does not cause a fire accident or damage to fields, forests and open land, you must handle it correctly and observe any restrictions on where it may be used (where applicable). Tip: If you carry your lighter in a tightly sealable plastic pouch, you can still use it in damp or wet environments, for example in regions with rainy seasons. Otherwise, there is no guarantee that the spark will actually work.
The classic among storm lighters is the legendary Zippo. This is a petrol lighter with a flint whose flame does not go out in light to moderate wind. The foam inside absorbs the fuel and capillary action ensures that it is drawn up through the wick. To allow refilling on the go, there is the Zippo Power Kit with fuel tank and replacement flint including installation tool.
Glow‑plug or jet‑flame lighters can be ignited even under stormy conditions. These are special gas lighters. However, they cannot be used at very low temperatures.
Particularly practical is the Fox Outdoor multifunction gas lighter, which combines a lighter with a knife, corkscrew and bottle opener.
Because the Swedish army was once looking for a method of making fire in any weather and with as few aids as possible, the so-called Swedish steel or carbon steel was “improved” at that time. It can’t really be called “invented”, because this type of fire making already existed back in Roman times. Since matches obviously fail when the weather is bad or they simply break too easily, a different approach had to be established. Resourceful developers then created an alloy that produces sparks when scraped or struck quickly. You can use sharp-edged metals or stones for this, which keeps the required materials you have to carry to a minimum. Another advantage is that it can be made to work at any altitude, including on high mountain tours. Ideally, such an item can be carried as a key ring in your gear.
With the exception of the camouflage-pattern lighter, which is basically a normal lighter with a camo look, all our “fire starters” are specially designed for outdoor use. Here, petrol is usually used instead of lighter gas. It is considered more windproof and reliable.
Special features also ensure water resistance (not in all models), and of course we also have classic Zippos in our range.
Petrol lighters are considered all‑weather lighters, whereas standard (butane) gas lighters are better known as disposable flame sources. You can buy both types in our shop. The gas versions work without a wick, while the petrol versions use one. The wick draws the fuel upwards by capillary action, where it is mixed with oxygen as an oxidizer and burned. In general, a petrol lighter has a more constant and more voluminous flame than its butane counterparts. It also naturally smells of lighter fluid, whereas butane gas is almost odourless or at least not intrusive.
