High-quality sleeping bags for warm outdoor nights

Sleeping bags ensure warm nights and a calm, cozy sleep. We show what you should pay attention to.

What should be considered when using them?

Sleeping bags can be opened and closed with a zipper. Before getting into the sleeping bag, the zipper should be opened. Once your body is inside the sleeping bag, the zipper can be closed again. This ensures optimal use of the available space. A small pack size is therefore extremely important.

The sleeping bags in our range are made from warming materials that are designed to be weather-resistant. This means that most variants can also be used outdoors. To ensure that the sleeping bag can be transported quickly and easily, it must be rolled up and then stuffed into a compression sack. At night, the sleeping bag protects you from the cold and ensures a cozy, warm sleep. The high quality of our sleeping bags guarantees a long service life.

Which sleeping bag is the right one?

You can hardly go wrong when choosing and buying sleeping bags from the range presented here. All our sleeping bags come in olive green or other greenish shades. This means they can easily be used for tactical maneuvers and are suitable for both summer and winter. They blend discreetly into their surroundings, are lightweight and do not give off any telltale color signals.

Sleeping bags can vary in size. The different brands that specialize in sleeping bags, such as Carinthia, offer a wide range of types and sizes that should be adapted to your personal needs. However, a length of 200 centimeters should be sufficient even for the tallest user. It is important that the sleeping bag must never be too small. Otherwise it could get tight: this not only leads to poor heat generation and retention, but also to a feeling of constriction that promotes an uncomfortable night’s sleep. Large sleeping bags guarantee maximum freedom of movement, which contributes to an overall good feeling.

You should also pay attention to the weight of a sleeping bag, as an ultra-light sleeping bag will not unnecessarily make transport more difficult.

Expert tip:

Washing/cleaning sleeping bags the right way

Normally you don’t absolutely have to do it, but every now and then a sleeping bag is simply due for a wash. Since this should only be done by hand, you will usually have to wash it in the bathtub. As a rule, the filling material should not play a major role here, but of course you must observe the manufacturer’s instructions and give these recommendations priority over any other tips.

It’s best to fill only a relatively small amount of water into the bathtub and mix it with detergent. If there is a liner in the sleeping bag, it should be removed beforehand. Then place the sleeping bag in the tub and knead it through. Once it has been thoroughly cleaned, the water can be drained and the sleeping bag wrung out. Of course, you now need to repeat several rinsing cycles with clear water following the same pattern.

For drying, it is recommended to set up a sturdy clothes rack in the bathtub and hang the sleeping bag over it, ideally with two people. A lot of water will drip off, so you should choose a place like the bathtub for dripping and drying.

After that, you can consider applying a waterproofing treatment. There are special sprays and products for this. If waterproofing is necessary, this is usually noted in the manufacturer’s care instructions.

Questions: Sleeping bags

What sleeping bag shapes are there?

Rectangular sleeping bags: The classic sleeping bag shape, good for mild temperatures.

Egg- or teardrop-shaped sleeping bags

These are a good compromise between blanket and mummy sleeping bags. They are designed to offer more freedom of movement than rectangular sleeping bags.

Mummy sleeping bags

They can also be used at cooler temperatures and are ideal for winter, optimally adapted to the body’s warmth zones.

How do you find the right size/fit?

There is really only one thing to bear in mind here: any empty space in the sleeping bag, for example due to excessive length, is difficult for the body to warm. But even more important is essentially finding the right shape for you, such as a mummy sleeping bag. This means that the shape of the sleeping bag is not straight but adapted to the shape of the body. Since any air spaces also have to be warmed, such a shape is naturally advantageous because it minimizes these areas as much as possible.

Which features should you look for?

A hood or thermal collar can help prevent your body from cooling down in the head and neck area. Zippers often have a cover flap so that little heat can escape here either and you are also less likely to injure yourself.

What is the so-called differential cut?

Most modern sleeping bags consist of several shells, an inner and an outer one. These shells should be different sizes to prevent the filling from being compressed.

What does coupling mean in relation to sleeping bags?

If you want to use two sleeping bags as a blanket when on holiday as a couple, you should make sure to buy two sleeping bags of the same model. This guarantees that the zippers will match up exactly. There is usually a right-hand and a left-hand model, which essentially only refers to the side on which the zipper is located. If you don’t need an insulated underside or a hood, you can also couple two right-hand or two left-hand models.

What types of filling materials are there?

There are fillings made of down or synthetic fibers. There are no major advantages or disadvantages either way; you can decide fairly freely here. Experience from long-time outdoor users shows that the often-cited issue of down soaking up moisture actually occurs only rarely. The only thing to bear in mind is that if you opt for a down sleeping bag, you shouldn’t cut corners in the wrong place and should make sure it has a high-quality down fill.

What is meant by so-called fill power?

With down, you should pay attention to the so-called fill power rating, although the data given by the manufacturer unfortunately does not necessarily have to correspond to reality. The values are given in “k/u”, cubic inches/ounce, e.g. 725 k/u. This explains why the information is often also given in “cuin”, which stands for “cubic inches”, i.e. likewise cubic inches.

What does swelling capacity mean?

Thanks to the unique G-LOFT® technology, the sleeping bags retain their insulating performance even in high humidity. They are durable, easy to compress and are used for both military and civilian applications.

What is the best way to store them?

As long as the sleeping bag has not become damp or even wet, you can simply pack it after use and some airing out – without compressing it – into one of the fabric storage bags sold, for example, for under‑bed storage. Alternatively, some outdoor fans wrap their sleeping bags in old duvet covers. The important thing is not to squash or compress it, as this would compress the filling too much, preventing it from fully lofting and thus reducing its insulating performance. There are also special storage bags; here everyone has to decide for themselves which option they prefer.
