Adhesive tape & duct tape – for outdoor & duty use

Adhesive or duct tape is an essential part of outdoor gear

Duct tape ensures that objects that need to be joined together get the necessary hold. It is supplied on practical rolls. As an alternative name, you can also call it duct tape or gaffa tape/gaffer tape.

The possible uses for adhesive tape are extremely diverse

Duct tape can be used in many different ways. In many cases, for example, it is used to secure luggage during transport. The luggage can be taped for better stability. This is sometimes necessary when flying, as it is well known that baggage is often not handled very carefully. The tape can also be used to fix objects in place. It has a wide underside that adheres firmly and can be easily pulled from the roll. Dispensers help with use by holding the tape and making it easier to tear off using an integrated blade or serrated “edge”.

The adhesive tapes are available in different sizes and versions

ASMC offers adhesive tape for a variety of applications. Carpet tape is not only suitable for fixing carpets, it is also very useful when camping or for other outdoor activities. You should always carry a roll with you. Duct tape has very high adhesive strength. The name was adopted from the military sector, and the tape is also frequently used there. For some time now, however, it has also become common in everyday life.

Experten-Tipp:

Make things easier to find in the dark with phosphorescent tape

Wrapping weapons and mounted flashlights, as seen in films, is not the only use that makes handling in the dark easier. There are also similar applications for everyday purposes. For this, there is adhesive tape that charges up with light during the day and, using fluorescent / phosphorescent material, emits the light at night as a faint glow. Ideal for finding things more easily again when you’re, for example, in a tent.

Questions: adhesive tape

How do duct tape and gaffer tape differ?

Basically, they are one and the same thing. Duct tapes are considered extremely tear-resistant and were and are used primarily in military applications. The great advantage of these adhesive tapes is their extreme tear and adhesive strength. Hardly any other adhesive material adheres so well even to unfavorable surfaces such as stone, for example. Duct tape usually holds very well even there.

Where does the term gaffer or gaffa tape come from?

In English, the lighting specialists on film sets and in the theater are called “gaffers”, which is how gaffer tape came into being over time. Even today, it is still used extensively in stagecraft to temporarily secure or route cables so that no one can trip over them.

Where does the English term “duct tape” come from?

The tape was originally, as so often, probably invented for the military to protect the openings or gaps of ammunition boxes from water. But these extremely robust adhesive tapes soon found their way into the hands of janitors and homeowners. They liked to repair their ductwork for rain gutters using this tape. From this, the term “duct tape” likely developed over time. At the same time, the standard color probably changed from military green to the usual gray. Another reason could be the close relationship to the word duck, which, in addition to its classic meaning of the bird, also refers to a very hard-wearing cotton fabric.
