Used military aluminum cot
2XL camp bed with side pockets
US-style aluminum cot, 190 x 65 cm
Arm-O-Bunk cot with side pockets, olive green
US-style steel cot 190x65 cm
The frame of the cot or bed should stand firmly so that it does not tip over when you move at night. If you cannot find a place on stone or concrete, at least make sure you set up the cot on a level surface.
Each camp bed comes with a specified maximum load that must be strictly observed. Anyone planning to cover longer distances with the bed should bear in mind that a higher load capacity also increases the bed’s own weight.
A camp bed protects you from sleeping directly on the ground, but not from potential pests in the air. Depending on your destination, you should purchase an additional mosquito net and fit it snugly around the cot.

For a long service life of camp beds, attention should be paid to a high-quality frame. The ASMC range generally relies on high-grade aluminum which, if the maximum load capacity of a cot is observed, can be used for countless trips, field camps and excursions.
However, a camp bed that takes up little space when folded is also recommended as a guest bed, although you can of course also use the slightly heavier air bed here. These models are a little more comfortable for your guest.
Even though such a camp bed basically protects you from ground cold, you should not underestimate how much your back and the underside of your body can cool down when lying down. Here it makes sense to use a sleeping pad that truly lives up to its name.
Some camp beds come with a practical carrying bag, which, depending on the folding mechanism, can accommodate a cot with a very small pack size (see next point). This not only protects the cot from damage and dirt, but also provides the best carrying comfort for the respective model.
The pack size refers to the space required by a bed when folded up and ready for transport. In addition to the weight of the product, this must of course be factored into your plans for any trip, whether by car or on foot. A common weight for products with a steel frame is around 8 kg, by the way.
You can tell relatively quickly whether you’re lying on a high‑quality camp bed or on a budget model. This has to do both with the stability of the entire construction and with the cover or the material used for it. If you plan to use the cot more than twice a year, you shouldn’t cut corners here.
Most beds have an aluminum, steel or wooden frame: aluminum is of course the lightest, while steel – if it consists of wide tubes – can significantly increase the overall weight. However, it is also much more stable. A mixed variant is therefore often used: aluminum frames reinforced with steel tubing, which simply have a thin steel tube inside. Then there are wooden versions, which can be more pleasant to assemble (aluminum frames are sometimes considered sharp-edged).
There are models made from cotton blends, but pure nylon is also often used. Unfortunately, this can sometimes be a bit "noisy" when you move on it. Personal preferences naturally also play a role here. If you value wipe-clean surfaces, you may be better off choosing the nylon version.
With taller body sizes, you can quickly bump into the crossbars at the top and bottom, which is of course very uncomfortable, especially in the head area. You should therefore make sure that the overall length is sufficient so that you can still lie comfortably on the soft sleeping surface.
