It was personal experiences that gave company founder Hartmut Ortlieb his inspiration in rainy southern England: there was a need for waterproof equipment that people could use outdoors to provide a certain level of comfort. Soaking wet himself, he came up with a brilliant business idea and founded ORTLIEB Sportartikel GmbH in Nuremberg in 1982. From the initial panniers, many other products such as sleeping bags, first-aid kits and other useful accessories were developed.
