Be prepared for your next trip with mugs and travel cups

Cups make it possible to enjoy drinks on the go. We show which different variants exist and what differences there are in the materials.

What should be considered when using cups?

After use, cups and drinking vessels should be cleaned as soon as possible to keep them hygienic. Otherwise, pathogens and germs can very quickly get into the cups during outdoor activities and become established there.

Particularly sweet or sugary drinks can quickly leave deposits that are difficult to remove afterwards because they really stick. Before stowing, the cups should be wiped out with a dry cloth so that no liquid or moisture gets into the backpack.

Which mug is right for me?

Bending the stick breaks a small tube inside, allowing the previously separated chemicals to react with each other. The reaction is called peroxyoxalate chemiluminescence.

Our range also includes mugs with lids, plastic and stainless-steel mugs as well as canteens, field cups, extremely robust glasses and collapsible cups. The appearance of the mugs is usually of secondary importance: in this respect, you can choose according to your individual preferences.

Expert tip:

How to save weight and pack volume

To save weight, it is advisable to repurpose items. If you opt for a stainless steel mug instead of a plastic version, you gain the advantage that you can also use it as a pot for boiling water.

Questions: Mugs

What materials are travel mugs usually made of?

Metal cups naturally have the major advantage that, in an emergency, you can also use them for cooking. However, you should always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use in this case! Most models are also available in hard plastic or polycarbonate, and more rarely in porcelain. Besides the area of use, personal preference naturally plays the main role here. In terms of weight, most materials should not differ significantly, although you should expect a bit more weight with porcelain.

What variants are there?

First and foremost, because they are extremely practical, are folding cups. With these, the walls of the vessel collapse when not in use, so the cup takes up hardly any space during transport. They are also often called telescopic cups. In addition to completely normal cups, there are also models with carabiners as handles, which allow them to be attached to the outside of your gear so that no pack volume is used. As a third option, there are cups with lids, which can of course also be used in the car on your daily commute to work, for example.

What else should you pay attention to?

Depending on how many cups you’ll need on your trip or excursion, it may be worth investing in stackable models. These naturally take up less space than non-stackable versions.

How are cups cleaned?

That naturally depends heavily on the intended use and the material. If you often drink (black) tea from the mug, you’ll have to deal with heavier staining than someone who only fills it with water. Rinsing/swilling it out immediately reduces the risk of beverage residues sticking. Otherwise, only mild cleaning agents – or even better, only biodegradable dish soap – should be used. A dedicated dishcloth or a soft cloth is ideal for this.
