Handheld lamps from ASMC – made by professionals for professionals

When camping or engaging in other outdoor activities, hand lamps are an indispensable companion. ASMC explains what you need to look out for when choosing a device.

This is what you should bear in mind

For handheld flashlights, quality and reliability are important criteria, because in open terrain a lamp failure can lead to unpleasant or even dangerous situations. In general, these lights should be of robust construction. If they are used mainly for camping or similar activities, you should make sure that the housing is resistant to dirt, moisture, and splashing water. Due to significantly better performance in terms of brightness and runtime, devices with LED technology should always be preferred over models equipped with light bulbs (if these are even still offered). A fundamental question is the choice of power source. Rechargeable batteries are inexpensive to charge and provide a moderate operating time; combined with a 12 V charging cable, such devices can usually also be charged via a car battery. In contrast, battery‑powered lights offer independence from a charging station; with a set of spare batteries, you are well equipped for a camping holiday or trips far away from power sources.

Which light is suitable for which purpose?

The market offers numerous models for different areas of use, so before buying you should consider what the lamp will mainly be used for. Essentially, the following categories can be distinguished:

Camping lamp:

Such lamps usually have a hook or hanger so they can be attached to the tent ceiling or frame. They are powered by gas cartridges, rechargeable batteries, or disposable batteries; for rechargeable models, a 12 V DC charging cable is an advantage, as it allows you to charge the camping lamp from a car battery. Camping lamps should generally offer good brightness and long burn time; additional features such as a remote control or a hand crank for generating power in an emergency provide extra operational and failure safety as well as comfort.

Work lamp:

Founded in 1972 in Arnsberg, Umarex is now one of the most renowned partners for sport and recreational shooters when it comes to pistols and rifles

Flashlight / torch:

The classic lamp for hobby, leisure and work. Numerous models are available on the market, differing on the one hand in size and on the other in various additional functions. Unlike a classic flashlight, a baton-style lamp generally has a continuous light function as well as coloured LED lights that can be used to emit a kind of emergency flashing signal.

Experten-Tipp:

Morse code

It’s not only in the audio or radio sector that it makes sense to have a Morse code chart at hand. With this simple conversion table for letters and words, universal, partly language‑independent communication is possible – especially in emergencies. Questions: Handheld flashlights and lamps

What power sources do hand lamps or work lights use?

Most of these are powered by kerosene or electricity, some models also by gas. There are basically no explicit pros or cons, but one advantage of batteries is that you can also use them for several devices outside the lamp. You might end up carrying kerosene only because of the lantern. In addition, electric lamps are of course emission-free, but may have a “cooler” light than gas or kerosene lamps. For those who want to be completely independent, there are also so-called dynamo lamps, which work in principle like a dynamo light on older bicycles: you turn a crank and generate electricity, which then powers the lamp or is temporarily stored in a battery. Some lamp models also work with a block battery, available separately or included, which replaces the usual disposable batteries.

What designs are available?

Whether it’s an LED work light, a gas lamp or a (rechargeable) handheld spotlight, there are a wide variety of models that can be folded or collapsed to a very small size yet are still designed as freestanding units and therefore, despite the same range of functions or type of use, have a smaller pack size. There are also hand lamps and flashlights that are specially designed to be carried in the hand for longer periods. In addition, we offer conventional flashlights that include an additional, switchable lighting module that is not mounted at the front. Floor lamps are usually intended for tents or camping, but of course they can also provide all-round light in caves.

What does the abbreviation LED actually stand for?

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode, that is, a light-emitting diode.
