Due to their versatile usability, tarps have become indispensable in everyday life. We’ll show you what matters when it comes to choosing and handling them.

What should be considered when buying and using tarps?

A camp bed protects you from sleeping directly on the ground, but not from potential pests in the air. Depending on your destination, you should purchase an additional mosquito net and fit it precisely around the camp bed.

The thickness of the material should match the intended use. A thicker tarp is more robust and tear-resistant, which is reflected in a higher weight and larger dimensions when folded. Especially for outdoor applications – such as camping trips on foot – a thinner tarp is well suited due to its low weight and “backpack-friendly” dimensions; thanks to its insulating properties, it can also serve as a sleeping pad. Naturally, ASMC also offers models in camouflage designs.

Questions: Tarps

What types of tarps are there?

Depending on the intended use, different types of tarpaulins are offered on the market. For vehicles, a distinction is made between curtain-sided tarps, trailer tarps and standard tarps, whereas in the entire construction trade, as well as for painting and wallpapering work, universal cover tarps with high strength are used. There are special covers for swimming pools. Tarps for military use and the survival sector generally have to meet individual requirements in terms of weather resistance and color scheme (camouflage).

How do the different tarps differ?

Tarpaulins can generally be distinguished by their reusability, weight, light transmission and UV resistance, as well as their tear resistance and resistance to heat and weather in general. Which properties should be prioritized depends, of course, on the intended use.

What does the term “water column” mean?

The water column is a unit of measurement that indicates the impermeability of technical fabrics. It is measured by determining the fill height in a water‑filled cylinder with a diameter of 10 cm, which is placed on the fabric to be tested, at which the first drops of water seep through the fabric within 24 hours. The value is given in “mmWC” and is particularly important when high pressure is to be applied to the material.
