Fuels should be a standard part of every outdoor kit

For a camping holiday, an outdoor trip or for military use, carrying fuels that allow you to easily start a fire is very important. There are various options.

For easy fire starting

Esbit cubes, gas cartridges, and the tried-and-tested match are essential in the outdoor sector when you want to light a fire in the field. The dry wood you collected beforehand can be ignited very easily with an Esbit cube. It is a highly flammable material of which only a very small amount is needed. Matches should be used for ignition, as lighters are not as safe in this context. They can rust, fail at the worst possible moment, or put your hand too close to the ignition point.

Always carry enough fuel with you

A good alternative is fuel paste, which comes in tins and is easy to use.

Alternative method of fire making: potassium permanganate and sugar

If all else fails and you really have no way of creating fire in a “normal” way, you can also generate embers using potassium permanganate and sugar. The mixing ratio is 1:1. You then look for a smooth stone or a board and place the mixture in the middle, surrounded by stones so that the campfire can later burn at this spot. The actual ignition is achieved through strong friction. Both substances are distributed evenly. The sugar crystals then need to be crushed with a sturdy knife or similar tool. This should produce sparks, which in turn can ignite tinder material.

What is Esbit made of and why is it called that?

The name of the white, tablet-shaped fuel Esbit is derived from the name of its inventor and the product description at the same time: Erich Schumm’s fuel in tablet form. It consists of urotropine (hexamethylenetetramine HMTA) and has a calorific value of approx. 31,000 kJ/kg. It has been produced since 1936. How are heat output and calorific value related?

The heating performance of a fuel depends on many factors, such as physical properties like gaseous, liquid or solid form, as well as the environment and the technology used for combustion. What all fuels have in common, however, is that they need exactly the right amount of oxygen to burn properly. This is sometimes hard to find and requires experience, since too little oxygen naturally leads to undersupply, while too much results in cooling. Roughly speaking, calorific value is understood to mean the absolute energy content of a fuel if its exhaust gases contained 0% water.

How do fossil fuels form?

The classic example of a fossil fuel is, of course, crude oil. This has formed over hundreds of thousands to millions of years through sedimentation, lack of oxygen, high pressure and elevated temperatures. Its main components are dead organisms from flora and fauna. Other fossil energy sources are lignite and natural gas. The biggest disadvantage of fossil fuels is, of course, that they will soon be used up.

What are renewable or biogenic fuels?

Wood, for example, is a fuel that can always be replanted, reforested and thus cultivated almost indefinitely. As it regrows in the foreseeable future, it is a very good supplier of energy and raw material. Biogenic or, in short, biofuels are usually substances that have stored or processed solar energy through photosynthesis and can release it again through combustion. Both can also be referred to as energy crops when grown on an industrial scale.
