Finding the right way with GPS devices

Modern GPS-based navigation devices offer cyclists, trekking enthusiasts and geocaching fans a wide range of possible uses. We explain what matters when choosing a GPS device. Incidentally, the Global Positioning System was originally developed by the U.S. Department of Defense in the 1970s, at that time of course exclusively for internal purposes. Fortunately for all civilian or private users, GPS and its satellites can now be used free of charge by everyone. The positioning accuracy is usually in the range of 10 to 1 meter.

What has to be considered when using it?

The map data of the navigation device should always be up to date. Customer-friendly providers include free map updates with the purchase of a navigation device. Anyone who is on the road with a GPS for longer periods should ensure sufficient power supply. Connections for the car cigarette lighter or as a USB cable for the computer are worthwhile accessories. Secure attachment to the body, e.g. with a specially prepared pouch, makes the device easier to handle. Despite all safety measures, the GPS device should still be reachable with a single movement.

How do you find the right GPS device for your individual needs?

Before choosing a navigation, tracking or GPS logger system, you should consider what purposes the GPS device is to fulfill and in what terrain it will be used. Many models are optimized for drivers and offer a comprehensive overview of the German road network, but this material is not sufficient for cyclists or trekking enthusiasts. Large and expensive devices can be equipped with extensive maps with different scales and functions; in this case, however, you may end up paying too much for comprehensive equipment when you buy.

From classic route planning and marking your own tracks to special functions such as compass or barometer, many GPS devices offer numerous extras. Before purchasing, the full range of functions should be checked to get the best individual performance from the device. At the start of a trip or excursion, you should be familiar with all the important functions of the GPS system so that you do not run into difficulties with certain settings while on the move. The more functions you want, the more complex the operation is likely to be and the more time you should invest beforehand in learning to use the navigation device correctly. Ultimately, the form factor is a key criterion when buying a GPS device. Systems in the form of a wristwatch on your arm are compact and comfortable, but may make menu navigation more difficult. Larger models are more robust and easier to operate, but have to be carried on your person as additional luggage.

Devices that are used purely to record a track, i.e. a route, are referred to as GPS loggers. Since they usually have no display and no other functions, the battery naturally lasts significantly longer.

When weighing up the pros and cons of different GPS models, you should also consider supplementing them with a radio. Radios provide a reliable communication alternative, especially in areas where GPS signal strength may be weak or in emergencies where direct communication is crucial. They can play an important role in your overall kit, particularly when navigating in remote or challenging terrain.

Expert tip: Navigation by the stars

Here’s how: How to navigate by the stars: If no positioning device is available and the constellations are unfamiliar or the North Star is obscured by clouds, you can still orient yourself using the stars. Any star that is close to a fixed point is suitable for this. Suitable fixed points include a stick, a rocky outcrop, or the top of a tree. You need to observe the star directly above the fixed point for a few minutes. Important: Neither you nor the fixed point may move. After just a few minutes you can see the star moving relative to the Earth. You can now roughly determine the cardinal direction from the direction of movement:
• Star rises: east
• Star sinks: west
• Star moves to the right: south
• Star moves to the left: north
Note: This type of orientation is an approximation method and only gives a rough indication of the cardinal direction.

Questions: GPS

The GPS reception is not working – what can I do?

Please note that positioning in buildings or other enclosed spaces is always very difficult, as GPS signals can be blocked in such cases. To minimize potential sources of error, positioning should take place outdoors whenever possible. Make sure there are no barriers in the way. If the navigation function has been in offline mode for several hours, all data and settings must be re-determined or recalculated at startup. This means more time is needed to establish a satellite connection, which can take several minutes.

Do you need maps to follow planned routes?

As a rule, you no longer really need them. However, a good tour planner does not rely on just one navigation method. Maps offer the possibility of alternative routes and contain additional information about the region.

Some routes lead through dense forest – will I have reception there?

Very dense forest, mountain valleys and unfavorable satellite positions can interfere with reception. Since the position of the GPS (during most activities and tours) is constantly changing, any outage is usually only of short duration and re‑acquisition of the signal is possible almost immediately.

What advantages does a GPS device have over hiking maps?

GPS devices display the immediate surroundings at variable scales. They always know where to go and where you are. You can zoom in and don’t have to fold them like traditional hiking maps. Further advantages are that you can read your speed and altitude.

Does the route you want to take have to be saved on the GPS device beforehand?

No, it doesn’t have to. You can plan a route on your computer and transfer it to the GPS device if you wish. You can tell the device to guide you to your destination by the fastest or shortest route, or you can simply use it as a map.
