Before using a grill for the first time, the instruction manual should be read. When setting up the grill, make sure it is firmly and securely anchored to the ground. A level surface is an advantage, but is not absolutely necessary for some models such as a swing grill.
All flammable materials, especially barbecue lighters, should be stored at a safe distance. While preparing food on the grill, it should be kept under constant supervision. Gusts of wind and carelessness can quickly lead to dangerous situations in which fires can start.
When using a grill, any children present should definitely be supervised. The grill’s flame should not come into direct contact with the food. Grilled food tastes best when it is cooked slowly and at some distance from the flame.
Before choosing the right grill, you should consider where it will be used. Smaller disposable grills are ideal for use on balconies or when camping. If you need a larger grill for camping, you should focus on a foldable model. These are compact in design and can be transported quickly and easily.
In addition to conventional grill grates, coated grates are also available, which are particularly suitable for preparing vegetables. While the majority of models are suitable for “normal” meat preparation, others are specifically designed for smoking meat and fish.
The swing grill is becoming increasingly popular. You can either attach a grill grate to it or a hanging kettle in which, among other things, you can also prepare soups. The variety in the range allows you to choose according to your individual preferences and needs.

Whether you’re grilling fish, meat or vegetables – the shape of the grill is the first criterion you need to decide on. The classic charcoal grill comes in various designs and weight as well as price classes. There are even inexpensive disposable grills that are basically only suitable for single use, but already include everything you need and have an extremely small pack size. Then there are kettle grills, named after their spherical design. Their advantage is that they can usually be closed with a lid and thus provide higher heat.
However, many models have in common that they are not, or only to a limited extent, suitable for touring. So most people will focus on models from the camping grill category. The only drawback then is simply that you naturally have to carry charcoal with you – unless you produce it yourself when you really need it. As a side note, column, gas and electric grills should also be mentioned which, in addition to many advantages, unfortunately have one major disadvantage: you either have to lug along a heavy gas source (usually a gas bottle), which is basically out of the question for camping and outdoor use. On the plus side, these usually already have a thermometer integrated into the lid, which is practical. Or, in the case of electric grills, you need to have a power source available, which of course will also be quite difficult to manage outdoors. With a column grill, its larger overall size unfortunately stands in the way of carefree grilling on the go.
There are various methods for this, each with different advantages and disadvantages. The rule of thumb is to try them all once and then stick with the method that works best for you. As a trick, we recommend treating coarse soiling/encrustations with black, burnt-on food residues in two stages. It’s worth always having a few old bread rolls or pretzels on hand for this. With this hard yet non-scratching and, above all, fully biodegradable material, you can gently remove the worst of the “dirt”. Afterwards, you can wash off the remaining rust with a sponge kept specifically for this purpose. Dishwashing liquid is best, as it is “food safe” and does not leave any odor or taste residues for your next barbecue.
It comes from English and means barbecue and refers to a cooking method in which meat in large pieces is cooked at medium temperature by the hot air of a fire.
