Expert tip: What to do when no (head) pillow is within reach?

Anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors knows that a doctor is not always nearby. For this reason, it is important to be prepared with the appropriate equipment.

Using a set should be practiced

Before heading out on an outdoor activity with such a complete kit, you should practice using it. This gives you confidence in handling the contents. If the kit really has to be used, the helper doesn’t have to think for long, and every move is spot on. In addition, this makes it easy to become familiar with the contents so you know what items and aids you actually have with you.
Our kits are designed so that they are easy to use and do not require lengthy instruction. Nevertheless, you should take a close look at the contents, because only then will the helper know what is in the kit, where it is stored, and how they can provide help.
There are different first aid kits for different purposes. Before setting off on an outdoor activity, you should consider which type of kit you need in order to be prepared for many eventualities. The light and compact packaging makes them easy to carry, so the kits do not add much weight and can be transported in a backpack or bag.

Choosing the right first aid kit

For first aid in emergencies, various kits are available from which you can choose depending on your needs and activities. When camping, it is usually sufficient if, for example, a first-aid box contains plasters and bandages for various minor wounds, since campsites are generally relatively central, so that a doctor or hospital can be reached in a short time. In addition, you are mobile when camping.
For demanding outdoor activities, a surgeon’s kit, rescue blankets, and sterile cloths should definitely be carried to compensate for this lack of mobility.
On hikes far from civilization and during military exercises, survival kits are indispensable. These contain everything needed for the initial treatment of wounds. A longer expedition or march should not be undertaken without such a survival kit. If an accident does occur, a person’s life may depend on the group carrying the right equipment for first aid. ASMC offers various first-aid kits and survival kits to meet different needs. It is important that the kit is adapted to the type and duration of the expedition and that sufficient supplies for treatment are carried.

There are various DIN standards that regulate the contents of a kit or first aid bag. The most important are DIN 13157, 13164 and 13169.

Expert tip: How do you treat wounds without industrial aids?

For example, wounds can also be disinfected with methylated spirits or tea tree oil. In a real last resort, you can supposedly also use – no longer hot – ash. However, we cannot accept any liability for this tip. It’s best to visit your family doctor before a major trip and clarify a few open questions like this.

In any case, you should carry compresses and sterile dressings; there is really no way around them and they are indispensable if you are out in nature for longer periods.

Questions: First aid

What needs to be considered when disinfecting wounds?

The first and most important point is that you should always rinse wounds thoroughly, of course only with clean water, ideally drinking water you’ve brought with you. In an emergency, water from a stream can also be used. You can then disinfect the wound with alcohol – ideally with an alcohol content of over 70% – if you have nothing else at hand (wound disinfectant spray, etc.). Be prepared for it to sting quite a bit.
There are also practical, individually packaged "alcohol swabs" that are designed precisely for such cases and are ready for immediate use. As an alternative, urine can also be used, as it is likewise considered sterile. Water is still regarded as the better option because it contains fewer additional substances than urine.
Also important:
You should not use disinfectant on large wounds or open fractures!
What you should definitely avoid:
Aftershave usually contains perfume and should never be used for disinfection due to the risk of blood poisoning.

How often should wound dressings/bandages be changed?

It is recommended to change them daily if possible.

What should you do if you feel unsure about providing care?

Of course, refreshing the first aid course you were required to take for your driver’s license is not a bad idea. However, there are also special outdoor first aid courses that realistically simulate and practice the kinds of situations that can actually occur.
