Where does the English term “duct tape” come from?
The tape was originally, as so often, probably invented for the military to protect the openings or gaps of ammunition boxes from water. But these extremely robust adhesive tapes soon found their way into the hands of janitors and homeowners. They liked to repair their ductwork for rain gutters using this tape. From this, the term “duct tape” likely developed over time. At the same time, the standard color probably changed from military green to the usual gray. Another reason could be the close relationship to the word duck, which, in addition to its classic meaning of the bird, also refers to a very hard-wearing cotton fabric.
