Generally, cover or tarpaulins are used to protect materials from moisture, wind, and damage. They are used both indoors and outdoors. When purchasing, make sure the tarp is made of sturdy, water-resistant material. The tarp should also have reinforced corners, and it's advantageous if the seams are sealed to protect against weather influences. Careful processing of the eyelets is important to prevent them from tearing out. A greater number of attachment points helps evenly distribute the tension load when stretching the tarp, preventing it from tearing quickly even in strong winds.
The thickness of the material should correspond to its intended use. Thicker tarps are more robust and tear-resistant, which is reflected in higher weight and larger folded dimensions. Especially in outdoor applications - such as hiking trips - a thinner tarp is suitable due to its light weight and "backpack-compatible" dimensions. Additionally, its insulating properties make it useful as a sleeping bag underlay. Of course, ASMC offers models in camouflage design.
On the market, different types of tarps are offered depending on their intended use. For vehicles, there are curtain tarps, trailer tarps, and standard tarps, while universal high-strength cover tarps are used throughout the construction industry, as well as for painting and wallpapering. Special covers exist for swimming pools. Tarps for military use and survival situations generally need to meet specific requirements regarding weather resistance and color (camouflage).
Tarps can be distinguished based on their reusability, weight, light permeability, UV resistance, tear resistance, heat resistance, and general weather resistance. The preferred properties depend on the specific intended use.
The water column is a unit of measurement that indicates the impermeability of technical fabrics. It measures at which water level, from a cylinder filled with water with a diameter of 10 cm placed on the fabric, the first water drops penetrate through the fabric within 24 hours. The value is given in "mm water column" and is particularly relevant when high pressure is to be applied to the material.
