Berets are the alpha and omega of every military outfit – at least when no helmet is required. They not only give the wearer a distinctive, personal feature, they make a statement. What do the colors of the headgear signify?
They identify the different troop types. Some examples: Green berets are worn by infantrymen, burgundy is the color of paratroopers and army aviation. Black belongs to the armored troops. Coral red berets are found in combat support troops like military police and signalers. Officer candidates traditionally wear this headgear in navy blue. Occasionally, there is also mention of commando berets, but this generic term cannot be attributed to a specific color, as the word is a kind of umbrella term.
