Proven among couriers: the messenger bag
Messenger bags are shoulder bags that were originally developed for couriers, especially bicycle couriers. Other names for them are body bag or, in German, Kuriertasche (courier bag).
What are messenger bags and what are they used for?
Messenger bags are usually rectangular in shape and have a long, relatively wide shoulder strap. The body of the bag is carried diagonally across the chest and back with this strap, allowing the bag to be pulled to the front relatively quickly to remove or stow documents, for example. This is why courier bags are still particularly popular with bicycle couriers today. Some models also feature an additional stabilizing strap so that the bag can be securely fixed to the body and does not slip while riding.
Messenger bags are opened via a relatively large flap that, when closed, covers almost the entire front of the bag. This is usually secured with a buckle or snap fastener. The interior of courier bags is divided into several compartments that generally extend across the full width of the bag. This makes it possible to transport file folders without any problems.
Key features and differences of messenger bags
Today, messenger bags come in a wide variety of versions in terms of shape, color, materials and design. Typical outdoor variants, for example, are made entirely of waterproof material and feature a roll-top closure. Such messenger bags are still the first choice for bicycle couriers today, as they must ensure that deliveries reach their destination in perfect condition.
Variants of messenger bags and their intended use
Even though most models are still functional in line with their original purpose, the messenger bag has increasingly evolved into a fashion item or accessory over time. In addition to vintage models and richly decorated versions, there are also military variants made of correspondingly robust materials and in the usual colors.
Messenger bags are now also very common among students and office workers. Note that the term "Bodybag" is only used in German-speaking countries. The same term refers to a corpse bag in English, which is why messenger bag is the usual designation here.
Of course, there are still models on the market that are geared to the needs of couriers. This applies especially to products from well-known outdoor brands.

How do you wear a messenger bag correctly?
For loading and unloading the bag, it is worn at the side at hip height, as this gives the wearer optimal access to all compartments. For transport, it is then simply pushed onto the back and, if available, additionally secured with a stabilising strap from the opposite side.
