Straps and belts for outdoor useEveryone should carry straps and belts in various designs, as they are always useful. They are made from different materials.
Straps and belts are mainly needed to transport materials or to secure them during transport. The items to be transported are lashed together with a strap so that they become easier to handle and can be carried comfortably. A good strap or belt is made of a tear-resistant, durable material that can be tightened. The fasteners are solid and can be securely locked. Some straps manage without a buckle; they can be made of elastic materials, such as rubber, and simply be wrapped around the object.
At ASMC, these little helpers can be purchased in various lengths and widths. Genuine, robust leather is offered as a material, as is stretchable rubber, from which straps are made that either have no closure or can be connected to an external fastener, such as a carabiner hook. The length of the strap is crucial when you want to secure large or small items with it. An important criterion for high‑quality straps and belts is tear resistance. They must withstand greater loads without the material giving way.
Because lashing straps are ideal for securing loads, they are useful not only in outdoor settings. When driving, especially with an open trailer, it is essential to secure the load against shifting or, even worse, falling off. The ratchet mechanism that most of these straps feature is perfect for tightening cargo down firmly. Otherwise, a lashing strap is always practical in outdoor use as well, since it is very versatile and can, in a pinch, be used to hang provisions from a branch so that wild animals can’t get to your food.
For the most part, of course, they are made from textile fibers, polyester, nylon, but often also from leather or other materials or composites.
Hook-and-loop fasteners, threading buckles or click closures are most commonly used. Which variant is best cannot be generalized. Click variants are also often colloquially referred to as clip closures.
The best source for this is the manufacturer’s information for the specific product. There are, for example, polyester tensioning straps (so‑called “ratchet straps”) that can withstand up to 600 kg. These are of course also suitable for tensioning a hammock if necessary. The load capacity is also often given in daN, which written out means decanewton and corresponds to 10 newtons.
