The company Leatherman was founded in 1983 and is based in Portland, Oregon, USA. In addition to its versatile multi-tools, the company produces high-quality bit sets and pocket knives made from premium steel. Although the brand name Leatherman is protected, it has become established in everyday language worldwide as a generic term for a wide range of multi-tools from other manufacturers.

Leatherman combines quality and functionality in its tools

The pocket multi tool, popular with DIYers and home craftsmen, was developed by Tim S. Leatherman in the mid-1970s after a car trip through Italy. During his tour of Europe, the engineer had a car breakdown and no tools available. The patent for the Leatherman was filed in 1980. The multi-function tool with large pliers has been continuously developed since then and is offered with a leather case and/or a practical attachment eyelet.
