CCE camouflage pattern: the woodland pattern of the French armed forces

The CCE (Camouflage Centre-Europe) is the classic woodland camouflage pattern of the French armed forces, specially developed for temperate forests and field landscapes in Europe. Since its introduction in the 1990s, it has replaced the traditional TAP and F2 uniforms and still characterizes the army’s field clothing today.

CCE: history, origin and development

The development of CCE began in the early 1990s to replace the old woodland patterns that were not optimal for European forests. The pattern consists of four main colors – green, brown, black and light beige – and combines larger color areas to break up the soldier’s silhouette.

CCE is specifically tailored to the flora and vegetation of Central Europe and has only been slightly modified over the years to take new fabrics and uniform designs into account.

CCE uses large, irregular color patches that mimic typical forest and field structures. The color combination provides effective camouflage by day and in light shade. Compared to digital camouflage patterns, CCE deliberately dispenses with small pixels, as large color areas are more effective in European forests. In terms of materials, the uniforms are robust, breathable and suitable for various weather conditions.

CCE in use with the French Army

CCE is used on uniforms, helmets and tactical vests. The army employs the pattern in field exercises, training camps and operations within Europe. Thanks to its versatility, CCE is also suitable for outdoor training, tactical drills and scenarios where camouflage in forests and fields is crucial.

The uniforms combine functional cuts with pockets and knee and elbow reinforcements, providing optimal freedom of movement for soldiers.

While CCE was developed specifically for France, other countries use adapted woodland or flecktarn patterns: Germany relies on Flecktarn, the United Kingdom on MTP. CCE is characterized by larger color fields and subtle contrasts that are particularly effective in temperate European forests.

Most European camouflage patterns are based on local flora, light conditions and terrain shape – CCE is a classic example of functional adaptation.
