Hobo stoves – powerful cooking with little fuel

If you want to be as self-sufficient as possible and are looking for a mobile fire pit, a hobo stove is definitely the right choice for you. It requires little fuel and only needs twigs or small pieces of wood to be lit. This not only saves you extra weight from gas cartridges and the like, but also means you can find the necessary fuel almost anywhere. Thanks to their small pack size, foldable hobo stoves fit into any kit and can be assembled quickly with just a few simple steps.
They owe their name to North American migrant workers. These so‑called hobos often traveled in freight trains in search of work, where open fires were prohibited. To be able to cook and keep warm on their journeys, they eventually came up with the ingenious idea of lighting their fire in tin cans. This “can stove” is essentially the prototype of today’s hobo stoves and serves as the basic concept for product development.
Consisting of a metal container with holes in the lower section that serve as the combustion chamber, hobo stoves make use of the so‑called chimney effect. Here, the lighter combustion gases rise due to the intense heat and, in combination with the constant supply of fresh air, create an intense flame.

Cooking on a real fire

When it comes to fueling your hobo, there’s hardly a better fuel than wood. Not only does this mean significantly less weight from extra equipment, it also gives you an authentic experience with a real fire.
To better control your flame and the resulting heat, you should make a few preparations before cooking. We recommend collecting and setting aside three different sizes of wood to fuel your hobo stove. That way you have everything at hand while cooking and can quickly add more.
We divide the wood into three different sizes so you can regulate the heat intensity more effectively:

  1. small, thin wood with a diameter of only a few millimeters: produces a short, intense heat that is needed for kindling
  2. medium-sized wood with a diameter of around 0.5 cm: placed on individually, these pieces produce relatively even heat
  3. thicker pieces of wood with a diameter of up to 1 cm: burn down very slowly and are mainly used to create a bed of embers

If you prepare wood in these sizes before lighting the fire, you can quickly add more when your fire burns down. It’s important that the pieces of wood are cut so that they fit exactly into the combustion chamber and do not protrude from the openings or stick out.
With proper fueling and combustion of the collected wood, almost all of the heat is transferred directly to your cookware. This means you need only a small amount of fuel for maximum efficiency.
