Survival

What is survival, actually?

The word “survival” comes from English and literally means “staying alive.” It is primarily about living and surviving in the wilderness, enabling you to provide for yourself completely independently anywhere. In survival, the experience is the main focus: for many, it is a counterbalance to stressful everyday life, where they can challenge themselves and get by with as little equipment as possible. In addition, survival training is also an important topic in the armed forces, helping soldiers prepare for emergencies.

So survival training is primarily about acquiring skills and valuable knowledge that enable you to survive without extensive equipment.

We’ve put together a summary of the most important skills and the gear that absolutely belongs on your packing list. With our survival tips, you’ll get a better idea of life in the wild and learn how you can supply yourself independently in an emergency.

Survival equipment – Everything for living and surviving in the wild

During survival training you gain valuable knowledge and skills that enable you to take care of yourself independently in nature. For example, you learn which plants you can eat without hesitation and how to build an emergency shelter. For many, hunting is also a key focus of survival. In addition, one of the skills you will of course acquire is how to make fire.

You’ll find everything you need for this in our extensive product range! Whether tarps, water purification aids or axes – we have everything that makes life outdoors easier. To give you a better overview of our equipment, we’ve briefly summarized the most important points for you here.

The most important skills for surviving in nature!

The tasks of survival training are to teach you skills and knowledge that enable you to survive in nature. This includes, for example, building a shelter and preparing food. Water treatment is also an important aspect of survival that you should not neglect. To give you a better overview of the necessary skills, we have summarised the most important ones for you here!

Survival – Building a shelter!

If you want to survive in the wilderness, you absolutely must know how to protect yourself from cold and rain! That’s why it’s very important to learn how to build a shelter in nature. If you’re traveling without a tent and sleeping bag, this skill gives you the confidence of being able to find protection almost anywhere.

Survival – Navigation in the forest

Navigation is an important aspect to ensure you arrive where you want to go. In the forest, you can’t always rely on your GPS device or smartphone. That’s why you should definitely learn how to use a map and compass during survival training. We recommend a topographic map, which provides additional information about hills, mountains and forests. If you’re still looking for a practical compass for survival, you’ll find here a good overview of our products. They help you find your way in any terrain and ensure that you arrive where you want to go.

Survival – making fire

Being able to make fire is also an important skill for survival in the wilderness. It not only provides warmth in extremely low temperatures, but also helps you prepare your food. There are different ways to build a campfire outdoors. Besides classic matches or a lighter, you should get to know other ways of creating a flame during survival training. Fire starters are very popular – they usually ignite a piece of magnesium through friction and produce sparks. Waterproof matches also give you the security of having enough ignition sources with you for emergency situations. We’ve put together an overview of the fire starters and fire-lighting aids from our range for you at this link.

Survival – Eating and cooking outdoors

In survival training you also acquire skills such as how to prepare a hot meal outdoors and, in addition, which plants are edible, for example.

For all of you who prefer long-life food and are looking for a tasty, high-energy meal for your backpack, we have just the thing! In our extensive product range you will find not only freeze-dried meals but also wet rations that are easy and quick to prepare when surviving in the wild. Survival – water treatment

We all know that we need water to survive. That’s why it’s incredibly important that you carry enough fluids with you, especially in nature. If you don’t want to lug several kilos of water around with you, you can also buy chlorine tablets and other aids for water disinfection from us. You can find an overview of our water treatment products here. Water disinfection for on the go

In addition, we’ve put together plenty of tips on water treatment for you in a separate article. There you’ll find alternative options to filters and learn how to find drinkable water in the shortest possible time. You can find everything about emergency water treatment here.

With these skills, you’ve already laid the foundation for surviving outdoors. In proper survival training, however, you’ll learn even more. This includes, for example, rope work and knot tying. For real emergencies, it’s also advisable to learn how to hunt so you can truly provide for yourself autonomously. If that goes too far for you, our canned food and EPAs are a great alternative – they keep for several years and will keep you going on the move ;-)

Questions: Survival

What is the difference between bushcraft and survival?

When it comes to bushcraft and survival, it’s often hard to see where the line between the two lies. Since both groups spend a lot of time in nature and acquire skills that allow them to provide for themselves independently, it’s difficult to clearly distinguish between these areas. The main difference between these two interest groups lies much more in the reason why they do it.

If you love bushcraft – or, translated, wilderness skills – it’s much more about trying out new approaches. Bushcraft is a scaled-down form of camping where you forgo essential “luxury” equipment and rely primarily on natural materials. For the bushcrafter, it’s much more about challenging themselves and getting by with minimal gear in the outdoors.

Survival, on the other hand, is about bare survival: the intention is to prepare for real emergencies and acquire specific skills that enable you to survive in crisis situations. You learn techniques where you use only what is available in nature.

What belongs in your survival kit?

Your survival gear should include not only emergency rations and energy bars but also tools for water treatment. You should also, of course, include tools such as knives, multitools or folding shovels in your survival kit. To build yourself a good shelter outdoors, you should ideally also have a tarp. And last but not least, a folding shovel or a rain poncho naturally also belongs in your survival gear! You can find a summary of the individual items in our packing list above. This will give you a better overview of what absolutely needs to be in your survival kit!
