ASMC cutlery – For small and big appetites on the goChoosing the right first aid kit
On longer stays far from restaurants and supermarkets, you rely on the provisions in your pack or on what can be legally foraged, hunted or fished. The cutlery you use should be lightweight, compact, multifunctional and easy to stow. Tip: the service life of outdoor cutlery is significantly increased if it is cleaned and dried immediately after each use. This prevents corrosion and also serves hygiene. In addition, pocketknives and folding cutlery will only remain smooth and easy to open and close over time if you clean them right away.
The outdoor cutlery set with pocket knife offers not only a blade but also a multi-function tool. Including fork and spoon, it fits into a hard-wearing nylon pouch with belt loop. With the 6-in-1 pocket knife cutlery, which has no trouble even with wine bottles, the fork and spoon are even integrated as fold-out tools in the folder.
The so-called BW cutlery, which can be assembled from separate pieces, has been tried and tested for decades and has been used by the Bundeswehr. It also includes a bottle and can opener. Only a hole at the end of the handle for a metal ring or carabiner hook distinguishes this field cutlery and comparable models from the classic cutlery at home.
The high‑quality Eat'NTool comes from the legendary knife manufacturer CRKT in Oregon and combines the essential eating utensils and tools in 3CR13 steel, and can be attached to your gear via the carabiner hook.
The one-piece Spork Light-my-Fire cutlery and Primus folding cutlery made of durable plastic are also lightweight and robust.
You should make sure to use the right type of wood. Not every tree is non-toxic. Here is a brief overview of non-toxic tree species that are generally suitable for use (information without guarantee):
- Linden (very easy to work with)
- Oak (rather hard, so difficult to work, but also more durable)
- Poplar
- Fruit trees
- Maple
- Walnut
- Birch
- Weeping willow
Next you need a suitable carving tool, e.g. a pocket knife. However, the typical pocket knife is usually not ideal for elegantly creating the bowl of a spoon. There are special carving tools for this, but whether you really want to carry them with you is another matter. In any case, you should first roughly shape the outline of the piece of cutlery you want and then gradually work out the finer structures, such as the bowl of a spoon.
The occasionally recommended treatment with linseed oil should be carefully reconsidered for items used for eating.
Some multi-tool cutlery utensils even offer up to 7 functions. However, 3 are common – fork, spoon and knife – as these are the ones most frequently needed. A can opener should definitely not be missing, unless it is already integrated into the multi-tool that most outdoor fans carry with them anyway.
With nesting or folding cutlery, you should make sure that there is no rattling caused by loose locking mechanisms, as this can quickly lead to annoying noises on tours.
Most cutlery is made of aluminum or other metals, more rarely of wood. Plastic is also still used quite often, as it is of course very light. Both variants are almost always dishwasher-safe; however, you should consult the care instructions of the respective manufacturer for this.
