Prepared for emergencies with canteens

Yes, every medal in our range is always supplied with the matching ribbon. Thanks to its color scheme, this also has an authentic character and, depending on the type of award, has its own meaning, as different color combinations are possible.

What should be considered when using canteens?

When using canteens, there are generally no special points to note. To use them, the canteens must be unscrewed; after drinking, you must make sure that the cap is screwed back on tightly. Otherwise, the valuable drinking water could leak out of the bottle unnoticed. And of course, having your gear soaked through is far from ideal.

Canteens are intended only for filling with water. Other liquids can also be filled in, but you must pay attention to the consistency of the liquid. Milk must not be filled into canteens because it can oxidize with the metal quite quickly and spoil. Canteens should be rinsed out regularly. This ensures that the canteen remains hygienic and can be used over the long term.

You should completely avoid filling these drinking bottles with petrol or other toxic chemicals that might be used for cooking or hygiene, because you must always assume that an uninformed person might not know this, or that an emergency situation could arise in which someone is given this bottle for first aid. This could, of course, have fatal consequences.

Which canteen is right for me?

When choosing a canteen, you should first think about where you’ll be using it. Depending on the area of use, you can opt for a larger or smaller version. Opening and closing is done with a screw cap.

Some bottles come with an additional drinking cup that fits over the screw cap and can also serve as a hygienic lid or protect against dirt. This can often be attached with a rubber or plastic strap. When choosing a suitable canteen, you can pay particular attention to its design. Most canteens come in black and olive-green tones. In addition, there are variants with camouflage elements. These are ideal for use in woodland and meadow areas. The simple design of the canteens ensures that they blend in perfectly with their surroundings. Popular models include those from the manufacturer Nalgene.

Questions: Canteens

Why are most canteens made of aluminum?

Aluminum canteens are no heavier than plastic bottles, but in a pinch you can heat water in them and use them as a multitool. The aluminum bottle can be repurposed as a hammer, cooking pot, throwing weight for a rope, and many other things. There are no limits to creativity here. In addition, with aluminum bottles you are protected against potential plasticizers that may be present in PET bottles, for example.

How do you clean canteens?

This method is equally suitable for plastic and metal bottles. Ingredients: You’ll need a bottle brush, baking powder and kitchen paper (newspaper also works). Instructions: Put one or two packets of baking powder and some water into the bottle. Then scrub the inside thoroughly with the brush. Afterwards, rinse thoroughly with boiling water. Then stuff the paper into the bottle, as it will absorb any remaining odors.

Some radios have a special baby monitor function. This is essentially a bonus feature that may make buying a dedicated device unnecessary. The radio is then switched to a permanent listening mode that “monitors” the room, i.e. effectively keeps it under surveillance. Ideally, the device only starts transmitting above a certain sound level so that only the loud crying of a baby is transmitted, and not every creak of the cradle or similar noises.

Water becomes contaminated slowly; bacteria only begin to multiply after 1–2 days. It depends on whether the water has been standing in a cool place after filling and whether the bottle has not been opened. However, if you have already drunk directly from it, dangerous germs can accumulate more quickly. Some people get sick from this, others don’t. After just one day, air bubbles form and the water develops a slightly different taste. After 5 days you should dispose of it. Of course, there are also water filters and water purification products available if pouring it away is not an option. Tip: Fill water into plastic bottles and place them in the sun. The plastic lets UV rays through, which kill the germs.

Are there alternatives?

Alternatives to canteens include hydration systems that can be purchased separately and then stowed in a backpack. Other options are water packs or hydration backpacks that already come equipped with built‑in drinking systems.
