Gaiters – also called “gaiters” in English – offer several protective functions at once: they prevent moisture from entering your footwear, protect against injuries from thorns or undergrowth and, to a certain extent, keep ticks from getting under your clothing. Gaiters are lightweight and have a small pack size, which is why it’s always advisable to take a pair with you on longer tours. They also make an excellent addition to a poncho, which only protects down to the knees. Gaiters are usually fixed to the boot with hooks and just below the knees. Some models are also held in place by a strap that runs under the boot. They can be put on and taken off in no time at all, which is probably their biggest advantage over full-body rainwear, which is comparatively cumbersome and time-consuming to put on. Especially when you’re on the move and, for example, sudden rain sets in, this is an advantage not to be underestimated.
From dirt, moisture, thorns and ticks. However, gaiters are generally not completely waterproof, which means that moisture can penetrate, for example through uncovered seams. They therefore do not replace waterproof boots. Nevertheless, they can provide a significant first barrier against soaked shoes.
For mountain hikes or climbing tours, more robust models that also help with stabilization are recommended. If heavy rainfall is to be expected, gaiters with a membrane should be preferred. In terms of size, it’s best to orient yourself by your shoe size, provided no one‑size‑fits‑all option is offered.
