Light sticks provide a power-free light source by means of chemiluminescence.

A light source that needs no electricity and no batteries is particularly advantageous when you’re on the move. Light sticks that work as glow sticks are therefore suitable for many outdoor activities.

A so-called glow stick is very easy to use

Light sticks are available in many different (neon) colors and are very easy to use. Remove the sticks from the packaging and simply bend them. At that moment they begin to glow in the intended color. Their brightness is weaker than that of a flashlight or light bulb, but they still help with orientation in completely dark surroundings. And last but not least, children get a lot of enjoyment out of these practical lights. They glow for up to twelve hours and can then simply be disposed of in household waste. Glow sticks are recommended from about eight years of age.

Light sticks are available in different colors

The light sticks can be purchased individually in various colors. They are available, for example, in green, white, red, blue, purple and yellow. The luminous intensity is the same regardless of the color. At ASMC, light sticks can also be purchased with batteries. These are not classic glow sticks, but the battery‑powered light sticks are nevertheless a very good alternative to flashlights, as their lower light output prevents glare. All light sticks can be used in various outdoor areas, such as camping, in the military and on hikes. The chemical glow sticks can be used independently of power sources. If the light output is not sufficient, battery‑powered models should be used instead. However, this requires taking along a sufficient number of batteries. The best solution is to use both variants so that you remain independent during outdoor activities.

Expert tip:

Use light sticks as a light source while remaining concealed

There are glow stick models that emit their light only in the infrared range and can therefore only be detected with night vision devices. This naturally makes you almost invisible, provided you are carrying a night vision device yourself and can thus use the light source. The human eye cannot perceive the wavelength of infrared radiation. ,

What chemicals are glow sticks made of, and how toxic are they?

Inside a plastic casing, two chemicals are mixed or brought into reaction by bending, which triggers a chemical process that releases light. Many sticks are filled specifically with non-toxic ingredients, allowing them to be disposed of with household waste. In detail: most sticks contain hydrogen peroxide in a glass vial that breaks when bent. The surrounding liquid is usually a phenyl oxalate (oxalic acid ester) and a fluorescent dye solution (fluorophore). Tests have shown that trichlorophenol and dinitrophenols also work well as oxalic acid esters.

How long do light sticks glow?

Depending on the model of the stick, the burn time can be between 4 and 12 hours.

What other names are there for glow sticks?

There is also the very common term “Knicklichter”, which is especially popular among children. From English comes the term “glow sticks”.

What special variants are available at ASMC?

We offer special sticks that don’t strictly fall under the category of glow sticks, but function in a similar way. For example, the McNett sticks with photoluminescent pigment technology can be easily charged during the day with normal daylight and then release their stored energy in the dark. There are also regular glow sticks in a mini version. They don’t cost much in a pack of 10 and take up correspondingly less space. We also stock the popular party sticks, which are particularly long and thin, easy to shape and form. Finally, there are models that are battery-powered and can therefore be used again and again. These usually work with LED technology, as it is particularly energy-efficient.

What is the advantage of light sticks?

It is often stated that this faintly glowing light does not attract mosquitoes, which can be considered its greatest advantage. They are also suitable for underwater use, which naturally opens up many possibilities. Otherwise, the colored lighting is simply fun. At Christmas, for example, you can hang the sticks on the Christmas tree, avoiding the hassle of candles and the associated fire hazard.
