Well equipped with sleeping mats from ASMC

Sleeping mats are suitable for creating soft surfaces on otherwise hard ground as well as for insulation.

What should you pay attention to when using sleeping mats?

For the first use of a sleeping mat, there are really no special points to note, except that you may want to air it out thoroughly before using it for the first time. Sleeping mats cannot be washed. If a sleeping mat needs cleaning, you can wipe it down with a damp cloth. Before laying out the mat, the ground should be checked for small and large stones as well as hard irregularities. These can press up into the mat from below, causing pressure points and an uncomfortable lying sensation. You should also check whether the dimensions of the mat are compatible with your available one-person tent or other sleeping area to ensure maximum comfort. For those who prefer an elevated sleeping position and want to protect themselves from ground moisture, camp beds and cots are an excellent alternative.

Which sleeping pad is right for me?

First you need to consider in what kind of terrain the sleeping mat will be used. Depending on the nature of the ground, it may be advisable to use a thicker or thinner mat. In general, a distinction is made between standard and self-inflating sleeping mats. Conventional mats can be used on soft surfaces such as meadows. Self-inflating mats compensate for harder ground and larger uneven areas and increase sleeping comfort. When choosing the right mat, you can also select from many different colors.

In addition to subtle shades of green, you can also choose variants with camouflage elements. These allow perfect coordination with other gear. It is particularly important that the mat is large enough. Our range includes many different sizes so it can be individually adapted to your own height. To ensure it can be transported properly, we recommend purchasing a cover. This can also be bought with camouflage elements.

ASMC expert tip: Sleeping comfortably even without sleeping pads

A night in the snow:

Sleeping mats are a kind of add-on to the rest of your gear. But in an emergency you can also improvise:
A few layers of newspaper, a layer of straw or hay, old clothing, fir needles, leaves. To keep leaves or needles from scattering, you dig a sleeping pit or build a bed frame from four pieces of wood.

Questions: sleeping pads

What is the R‑value?

To avoid getting cold, you need a well-insulating mat. A sleeping bag only insulates heat upwards. The weight of the person in the sleeping bag compresses the filling, so it can no longer provide full insulation. How well a sleeping pad keeps out the cold is described by the R-value. This refers to the thermal transmittance coefficient, which indicates the insulating performance of sleeping pads.

Pack size – why is it relevant?

The longer, wider, and thicker the mat, the larger its packed size. This indicates how much space the mat takes up during transport. Note that for the same dimensions, inflatable mats have a smaller packed size than solid PE models. Anyone traveling on foot should look for a small pack size and low weight.

How does a self-inflating sleeping mat work?

The secret of the self‑inflating mat lies in its core, a foam core. Once the valve is opened, a highly elastic foam expands and draws air into the sleeping mat. Much like an air mattress, it cushions you using air. When you roll it up again, these cavities are compressed and the air can escape through the valve.

How should self-inflating sleeping mats be stored?

It’s best to store your sleeping mat unrolled with the valve open in a dry place. This allows moisture to escape from the mat and the core to relax. Prolonged storage in a compressed state causes the foam core to lose loft and tension.

How do you install replacement valves?

First you need a repair kit, which usually consists of a replacement valve and the corresponding PU adhesive for sealing. Use pliers to pull the old valve out of the mat. Then press the new valve firmly into the opening at the ribbing using adhesive and allow it to dry.
