Advantages of tarp tents

Tarp tents offer numerous advantages for your outdoor adventures! From versatility and light weight to easy handling – tarps are the ideal companion for any adventure in the great outdoors.

The versatility of tarp tents

Tarp tents have a wealth of advantages that make them an unbeatable choice for your outdoor adventures. First of all, they are incredibly versatile. Whether you need a robust cover to protect you from the whims of the weather, are looking for a shady retreat for a cosy outdoor lunch, or have to set up an improvised emergency shelter in the wilderness – a tarp can effortlessly meet all these requirements.

Lightness and compactness

Another major advantage of tarps is their light weight and compactness. Compared to conventional tents, they are often significantly lighter and can be packed away to save space. This makes them ideal for hikes, backpacking trips or camping tours where every gram counts. So if you’re going on multi-day trekking tours or planning a camping trip by bike, you’ll love the easy handling and minimal weight of a tarp.

Easy handling and quick setup

Another plus is the easy handling and quick setup time. With a little practice, you can pitch your tarp in no time at all, whether on your own or with the help of friends. There are numerous attachment options and configurations, so you can always find a suitable solution for your needs. This not only saves time, but also allows you to react flexibly to changing weather conditions or terrain.

How do I find the right tarp for my next trip?

When buying a tarp, there are several factors to consider to ensure it meets your needs and requirements. One key difference is the number of grommets and guy points. The more grommets and guy points a tarp has, the more flexible it is in terms of shaping and the more options it offers for different setup configurations. This versatility is especially useful if you want to use the tarp in different environments and weather conditions. It allows you to adapt the tarp optimally to your needs.

Another important criterion is the tarp’s resistance, which is usually measured in millimeters of water column. This value indicates how waterproof the tarp is and how well it protects you from rain. A higher rating is particularly important if you want to use the tarp as a sturdy tent or emergency shelter in heavy rain and wind. For use as a classic camping tent or sunshade, however, a more moderate value is sufficient.

The material of the tarp is also crucial. Polyester is widely used as a base material, but different manufacturers offer different material thicknesses and strengths. Some tarps also use blended fabrics, where Cotton has been incorporated. These offer greater stability and a more pleasant feel, but on average may come with a higher purchase price and a lower water column rating.

How should a tarp be used correctly?

Thanks to a removable hydration unit that can be accessed from the outside via a tube, you can get a quick drink at any time without stopping. This particularly benefits athletes, who no longer have to take a break to drink thanks to practical hydration packs and reservoirs.

Athletes and outdoor enthusiasts benefit from an even water supply and easy handling thanks to our high‑quality hydration bladders and packs. Our manufacturers such as Camelbak or Source offer reservoirs in different sizes and guarantee optimal carrying comfort for all activities.
Guy lines for pitching the tarp. It’s advisable to plan for one or two extra guy lines in case one gets lost or damaged.

If you have already used the tarp while traveling, you should check that all seams are intact before the next use. Especially if the tarp is meant to protect you from rain and wind, the seams must be closed and undamaged. The associated Storage bags for ropes & co. should be intact so that no accessories are lost along the way.

If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you know that there isn’t always a doctor nearby. That’s why it’s important to be prepared with the right equipment.

Expert tip: How do you pitch a tarp?

Regardless of whether a tarp is used for camping or as a sun sail, there are many different ways to set it up. Everyone can decide for themselves which variant is best suited to their purpose.. This guide article presents four common tarp setup variants.

Tarps FAQs

Are tarps waterproof?

All tarps made of polyethylene and PVC vinyl are water-resistant as long as the waterproofing is intact. If the waterproofing wears off, you can refresh it with a waterproofing agent. But be careful: tarps are water-repellent, not fully waterproof.

What ropes / cords are recommended for securing a tarp?

A 6 mm thick rope made of nylon or polyester knitting yarn is a good size; 10 millimeters in diameter is even better to be on the safe side. If the diameter is less than 6 mm, it is advisable to double the rope.

Is it possible to cook under tarps?

Cooking under tarps is possible, but not recommended. Tarps are mainly made from synthetic fibers and are therefore highly flammable (some manufacturers advertise that their tarps are made of fire-resistant materials, but this information is without guarantee). Not only cooking, but also smoking and any kind of open flame (e.g. candles) are prohibited under or inside tarps.

What is the “promille thickness”?

According to common opinion, this should not be done by laypeople, as the risk of further injury and/or blood poisoning/infection is far too high. Another difficulty is that you usually have a poor or no view of your own wound. Side note: Histoacryl, a medical tissue adhesive, is unfortunately not very suitable for outdoor activities if you want to avoid stitching a larger wound, because this product has to be stored refrigerated.
