Multicamouflage (short: MultiCam) is a camouflage pattern developed in the USA that is available in various colour variants. In some slightly modified versions it is currently used by a number of armed forces in different countries.
The MultiCam pattern was created through a cooperation between the US company Crye Precision and the United States Army Soldier Systems Center. The goal was to develop a camouflage pattern capable of blurring the contours of soldiers in a wide variety of terrains, seasons, lighting conditions and under infrared. Multicamouflage was used as part of the Brigade Combat Team Modernization program, which comprehensively modernized the United States Army. In addition, there are considerations to replace the current ACU combat uniforms of the US Army, which feature a digital camouflage pattern similar to MARPAT, with Multicamouflage.
The camouflage pattern was first introduced in 2002 and was initially intended to replace the existing desert and woodland patterns. Instead, however, the US Army decided in favor of UCP camouflage (Universal Camouflage Pattern, also known as ACUPAT or Digital Camouflage). Some American Special Operations Units therefore resorted to MultiCam until it was first used by the US Army in the context of the war in Afghanistan in 2010 to replace the previously used UCP.
It is currently available in a total of five different color variations: in addition to the standard version, there are the colors Tropic, Arid, Alpine and Black.
The camouflage pattern covers a wide range of applications, as it is offered in a total of five different colour variants. The “Alpine” variant is primarily suitable for snow-covered landscapes, tundra and alpine terrain. The application range of “Arid” is limited to deserts and temperate regions. “Jungle” is designed for dense jungle and forested areas. The standard variant has the widest range of use and can be employed more or less effectively in most of the above-mentioned environments. The “Black” variant was developed specifically for night operations. According to the manufacturer, the different variants can also be combined with one another. For some areas, for example, it is considered practical to use clothing and equipment items from two different variants.
Multicamouflage was developed in the early 2000s by the US company Crye Precision in cooperation with the US Army. Today it is used by numerous armed forces all over the world.
