Whistles perform various tasks in outdoor useWhistles come in different designs that can produce various types of tones. The volume of these tones can be varied, making it possible to agree on specific signals over longer distances. The biggest advantage over radios is, of course, that no power source is required. Using a whistle is very simple and requires no practice. However, the use and any signals should be agreed upon before deployment so that no misunderstandings arise. A whistle is a reliable instrument that performs well in any type of operation and is so small and handy that it can be carried on the person or attached to clothing.
At ASMC, customers can choose from a wide range of whistles designed for different purposes. Pealess whistles produce a very shrill sound that can serve as a warning or command. A signal whistle can be used to prompt a specific action that must be agreed upon in advance. The SOS whistle is used only in emergency situations. All whistles on offer respond immediately and are of high quality.
First of all: it takes some practice, and since these instructions are written in text form, no guarantee of success can be given. Even with an experienced instructor, the motto is: practice, practice, practice. It’s best to have someone who knows how to do it show you, because it’s much easier to learn by watching. Here, however, is a quick overview of how it can work. All roads lead to Rome, so you should simply try each method several times.
Method 1: Two index fingers Both index fingers must be placed under the slightly rolled-up tongue. Now press your mouth firmly onto the index fingers. If it doesn’t work straight away: this is completely normal, just repeat several times.
Method 2: Index finger and thumb of one hand Form the index finger and thumb of one hand similar to a “C’est bon” sign (food tastes good). Then “place” both fingers in your mouth, fold your tongue back a little, press your mouth together and blow air through. Again, the rule is: practice, practice, practice.
The airflow blown from the mouth is directed via a slightly larger resonance chamber onto an edge, where it is “pressed” and thus produces a tone. The resonance chamber is responsible for air turbulence, which amplifies the effect. Further information can be found here.
According to Wikipedia, whistles roughly fall into the pitch range of a child’s voice, which is around 440 Hz. However, every whistle is different due to its construction and the size of its resonance chamber, so no universally valid figures can be given.
There are also so-called dog whistles that produce a tone in the ultrasonic range. This is so high-frequency that it is inaudible to humans. They are also called high-frequency or ultrasonic whistles.
